TBI is investigating Smithville shooting after district attorney alleges suspect opened fire during arrest

SMITHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating a shooting in Smithville at the request of the district attorney.

The TBI confirmed to WSMV4 that 13th Judicial District Attorney Bryant Dunaway (serving Dekalb Clay, Cumberland, Overton, Pickett, Putnam and White Counties) requested that they investigate the incident, which occurred Thursday night.

Statement from Dunaway’s office He said District Attorney Chris Stanford (who serves Warren and Van Buren counties) opened fire during an attempt to arrest a man who had an outstanding warrant out of Warren County.

The TBI said no injuries were reported in the attack, and DeKalb County deputies confirmed they captured the suspect. Dunaway’s office also identified the suspect as Caleb Brookins.

Additionally, Dunaway’s office said a woman, identified as Hannah Rose, was arrested after she hit a deputy with her car while trying to flee the scene during the incident. He was charged with aggravated assault and evading arrest.

The officer was injured and taken to the hospital.

Brookins was transported to Warren County and Rose was taken to the DeKalb County Jail.

The TBI said the investigation into the incident is active and ongoing.
