Mobile jury acquits man on theft charge, hangs him on rape charges

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A Mobile County jury acquitted a Talladega County man of burglary but could not agree on a related rape charge.

The Mobile County District Attorney’s Office said no decision has been made on whether Taquon Wells will be retried on rape charges.

Prosecutors said Wells broke into a young woman’s apartment near the University of South Alabama on Halloween in 2021.

The incident led the victim to file a lawsuit against the owners of the apartment complex One Ten Students Living. The ongoing lawsuit accuses the defendants of “running a playground for predators” and failing to provide adequate security.

The owners of the apartment complex denied the accusations.
