Police arrested a man known as a Jubo League activist for indiscriminately firing 28 shots at students during the anti-discrimination movement in Chattogram on August 4.

Gunman Touhidul Islam was arrested during a police operation in Kamalnagar area of Satkhira Sadar on Friday, November 22.

Deputy Commissioner (crime and operations) Mohammad Rois Uddin confirmed the matter at a press conference held at the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) media center today (November 23).

Touhidul, also known as Hari Touhid or Farid, was earlier seen brandishing a gun and firing during anti-discrimination protests in the Chandgaon and Bahaddarhat areas of the city.

However, the police could not officially confirm Touhidul’s political affiliations even though he is known locally as a former councilor of city corporation Chandgao ward No. 4 and a follower of local Awami League leader Cannabisul Haque.

Answering a question, Rois Uddin said, “We could not find Touhidul’s political affiliation. He is a professional criminal and robber, with cases of murder, use of arms and extortion filed against him.” he said.

The official said Touhidul was accused in 12 cases in various police stations under the CMP, out of which five were accused of murder and the others were accused of violence, extortion, drugs and robbery.

“Touhidul admitted that he opened fire on protesters in Chandgaon on August 4 using a ‘Pakistani-made sniper weapon’. Our operations to seize the weapon and additional ammunition continue,” he said.
