After a 2-day manhunt near Dryden, Ontario, 2 Manitobans face a total of 30 charges.

Two Manitobans are in police custody in northwestern Ontario after a two-day manhunt.

Ontario Provincial Police arrested and charged two suspects following an investigation that resulted in the closure of a section of the Trans-Canada Highway east of Dryden on Friday, according to a police news release.

Multiple other emergency response units assisted Ontario police in the investigation.

The statement stated that Dryden police saw a man abandon his vehicle and steal the license plate of another vehicle around 11 a.m. on Thursday and initiated a traffic stop.

After the driver fled at excessive speed, the police started a long search to find the man and woman in the vehicle.

Just after 6 a.m. Friday, police received a report of a suspicious vehicle on Airport Road in Dryden. Officers found the vehicle and the two people inside matched the description of the suspects in the chase Thursday.

Police attempted another traffic stop, but the vehicle drove away at high speed, deliberately crashing into a marked police vehicle and causing serious damage, according to the statement.

The officers in the vehicle escaped uninjured.

Two hours later, police received another report that a man and woman were using a local taxi company and refusing to pay their fares. Upon investigation, police determined that the suspects matched the description of the two people they were looking for.

A 38-year-old man from Winnipeg is facing a total of 21 charges, including two counts of assaulting an officer, two counts of dangerous operation, failure to stop after an accident and theft of a vehicle worth more than $5,000.

A 31-year-old woman from Morris is facing a total of 9 charges, including assaulting two police officers.

Police are asking residents in areas east of Dryden to report any suspicious activity or undisclosed property during the investigation and to check possible security footage.

Both suspects are expected to appear in court in Kenora on Monday.
