MN man shot pregnant ex-wife months after being released from prison: charges

A man who had just been released from prison months ago after serving time for murder has now been charged with two counts of armed assault. He shot and killed his pregnant ex-wife Paul and a carjacking following the murder.

What do we know?

Mychel Stowers, 36, is charged with second-degree murder and murder of an unborn child for the fatal shooting on Oct. 19. He also faces charges of first-degree auto theft and second-degree assault in connection with the second shooting the same night. .

Police allegedly responded to Sycamore Street East on the night of October 19 after reports of gunshots being heard in an apartment. Inside, they found the victim collapsed on the floor. The victim was later identified by police as Damara Alexis Stowers.

Moments later, police responded to a report of a shooting during a carjacking on Acker Street, two blocks from the murder scene. During the conflict, the victim was injured with a bullet in his leg while the suspect fled with his Audi.

Officers said Mychel Stowers matched witness accounts of the suspect in both attacks. Later that night, Mychel Stowers allegedly called the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office and admitted to shooting someone, promising to turn himself in, but did not do so.

Background

Stowers was released from prison in March and allowed to visit his ex-wife at her home on Sycamore Street, the complaint states.

Stowers was fired after serving 16 years behind bars for a 2008 murder case. FOX 9’s archives show Antonio Simms was arrested for the shooting death in the parking lot of JJ Fish & Chicken on University Avenue in connection with a drug deal.

What’s next?

Stowers appears to remain at large after a series of back-to-back shootings. He was charged with warrants in both shootings.
