The unrest began when a team arrived at the Shahi Jama Masjid on Sunday to conduct a fresh investigation, and locals allegedly attacked security personnel and threw stones at police. In response, the police used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

The survey was conducted as part of the legal process linked to a petition by senior advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, who claimed that the mosque was actually a temple.
