Casagrande: Alabama disaster painted on a bloody Saturday, new life for Auburn

Casagrande: Alabama disaster painted on a bloody Saturday, new life for Auburn

This is an opinion column.

There was blood and rebirth.

Pain and joy.

The prequels to this Iron Bowl introduced a few twists to the already non-linear plot, which went straight to the shredder after the sun went down on Saturday.

How deep is the SEC?

The two teams entered with 1-5 league records, throwing the entire conference and national championship quest into chaos.

Still think this is the scenario? The SEC should fire, tar and feather the writers who devalued bets on one of the great rivalries and almost another on a bloody Saturday.

Not only did Oklahoma ruin Alabama’s bid for a fifth consecutive Iron Bowl win as a prelude to the SEC championship game, but Auburn nearly took a 43-41 sledgehammer into Texas A&M’s playoff berth He had a revenge meeting with his blood rival Texas. Thanks to a twisted web of tiebreakers, three-loss A&M can still play in Atlanta by beating the Longhorns.

The Crimson Tide no longer have dreams of Atlanta in December (or January for the national championship game) in their minds. A severe hangover awaiting their least favorite neighbor’s Thanksgiving leftovers.
