Man in prison for assault in Omaha dies in prison

A 56-year-old Omaha man who was serving a lengthy prison sentence for an accident that left a teenage girl paralyzed died Thursday at the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln.

According to the statement made by the Nebraska Department of Corrections, Kenneth Greer died in the hospital. Greer was serving a 19- to 20-year sentence after being convicted of assault in August 2020.

The statement stated that the cause of death has not yet been determined, but Greer was being treated for a medical condition. As is the case when an inmate dies in custody, a grand jury will conduct the investigation.

Greer was initially charged with causing serious bodily injury while driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury. In a plea agreement, the charge was changed to second-degree assault.

Omaha police said that on Nov. 6, 2019, just before 5:30 p.m., Greer’s brother was driving his 2000 Chevy Silverado pickup truck west on Grand Avenue when he struck the rear passenger fender of a 2016 Kia Sorento traveling north on 48th Street. The Kia turned and Greer fled westbound, then struck an eastbound 2012 Dodge Journey. Greer then ran a stop sign at 50th Street and Grand Avenue and crashed into the back of a 2012 Buick Verano.
