NYC Crime: Man falls to death from window during home invasion in Upper Manhattan

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, Manhattan (WABC) — A burglary in Upper Manhattan ultimately led to the death of a 73-year-old man.

Police said a man broke into the sixth-floor window of an apartment building near West 161st Street and Broadway in Washington Heights just after 4:30 a.m. Saturday.

The man then reportedly unlocked the front door and let two more people inside. Together they tied up a 40-year-old man who lived there and stole $8,000 in gold chains and $200 in cash before fleeing.

Authorities said the man’s father, Jacinto Remigo, who was home at the time, died after falling from a window.
“This is terrible. My condolences to him and his whole family; this is terrible,” said neighbor Henrique Sobrinho.

There are cameras in the building and detectives are continuing the investigation.

As for how one of the suspects got to the sixth-floor window, relatives of the victim told Eyewitness News that the suspect climbed scaffolding around the building and then took the fire escape to the top floor.

Remigo’s relatives are expected to make a statement on Monday.
