Shell Denies Closing All Gas Stations in Indonesia

Jakarta. Shell Indonesia, which runs the British oil company’s local operations, denied that all petrol stations in the country were closed.

Shell has been making headlines after Indonesian media reported that the company would close its gas stations in the country. The Association of Indonesian Oil and Gas Companies (Aspermigas) attributed the potential closure to state-run Pertamina’s control over most local retail fuel networks. Shell denied rumors of closure, state news agency Antara reported.

“Shell Indonesia would like to announce that the news that we are closing all gas stations in Indonesia is not true,” Susi Hutapea, the company’s vice president of corporate affairs, told Antara over the weekend.

Susi said Shell is largely focused on its gas station operations, although he declined to comment further on the rumors emerging in the market. He added: “We cannot comment on speculation arising in the market. Shell Indonesia will continue to focus on operating our gas stations for the well-being of our customers.”

Shell currently has over 170 gas stations in Indonesia, including the Greater Jakarta region and North Sumatra. The company has a lubricants plant in Marunda, Jakarta to support its sub-industry. Shell also has a fuel storage terminal in Gresik, East Java.
