Three people died after Google Maps led a car onto an unfinished flyover in Uttar Pradesh; Google responds

Three men lost their lives in a tragic road accident when their car, guided by Google Maps, fell from an under-construction flyover into the Ramganga River in Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh. The incident occurred on Saturday night when the victims were on their way to attend a wedding.

The victims, identified as Vivek, Amit and a third person whose identities are yet to be confirmed, were traveling from Gurugram to Bareilly. Relying on GPS navigation, they followed Google Maps’ directions, which led them to an unfinished bridge.

Unaware of the unfinished structure, the car continued onto the overpass and crashed into the shallow river 15 meters below. Citizens who saw the vehicle the next morning reported the situation to the police. All three passengers were found dead at the scene.

The incident sparked outrage among victims’ families, who criticized local authorities for a lack of security measures. “Why was the bridge left incomplete without proper barricades to warn drivers? This is negligence,” said a family member. They are demanding an investigation and have filed an FIR against the construction department.

Police confirmed the vehicle, believed to be a rental taxi, was badly damaged. While the bodies were sent to the morgue for autopsy, investigations are continuing to identify the third victim.

Google responds

In response to the tragedy, a Google spokesperson expressed its condolences and said: “We share our deepest condolences with the families. We are working closely with authorities and providing support to investigate the matter.”

The incident has reignited debates about the reliability of navigation apps and the responsibility of local infrastructure management. Although Google Maps is heavily relied upon for accurate navigation, experts say users should be careful, especially in unfamiliar areas.

This accident highlights the dangers of missing infrastructure and inadequate signage, especially in rural or under-construction areas. Local authorities have not yet made an explanation as to why the necessary security measures were not taken.
