Tempe brush fire being investigated as arson

TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — A fire that broke out Sunday afternoon in Tempe near the Salt River is being investigated as arson.

The Tempe Fire Department said the brush fire started on the north side of Tempe Town Lake, just east of the east dam.

The teams took the fire under control in a short time and prevented it from growing. No injuries were reported.

Tempe Police said some palm trees and wildlife were destroyed in the fire.

While the investigation into the fire continues, it is thought to have been started deliberately. Police said a shirtless man was seen running away from the fire.

Teams have largely extinguished the fire since Monday morning. Drivers on Loop 202 near McClintock Road may notice a slight haze and smoke odor during their morning commutes.

Anyone with information about the fire should contact the Tempe Police Department.
