ORIGINAL STORY (PUBLISHED 11/14/24):

CABARRUS CO., NC – Cabarrus County detectives hope a new lead will help them identify a woman found dead on the side of the road. The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office said a fisherman came across the body of a woman who has not yet been identified. A 911 caller found the woman’s body on the edge of the Rocky River Bridge on U.S. Highway 601 on Nov. 4. WCCB obtained the 911 call from the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office.

“Hey, I just called because I found a body,” the caller told the 911 dispatcher. “It looks like a woman. It has a garbage bag on its head.”

The body was decomposing when deputies found it, Lt. Chris Smith said. Investigators still don’t know who the woman is. Detectives have released photos of three leads in this case. The newest photo is of the woman’s toenail. It shows a nail painted white and decorated with rhinestones and gold palmetto tree ornaments. The woman also wore a gold chain necklace covered in 15 rainbow-colored stones. Investigators said the woman was wearing sweatpants with green, white and a distinctive race car image underneath the red stripe. The pants have a checkered pattern underneath the racing car.

Lieutenant Smith said leads have produced leads, but so far none of those leads have been reliable. The Sheriff’s Office wants to show these images to as many people as possible in hopes of identifying the woman’s body. The coroner is investigating how the woman died. Lieutenant Smith said he hopes more information regarding the woman’s identity will come to light once the autopsy is completed.
