An Oakland man allegedly kidnapped a woman after offering her a ride home from a bar

OAKLAND — What started as two local friends bar hopping on a normal Saturday night ended in the early morning hours when one of them was allegedly attacked by a man who offered the group a ride home.

Now a 20-year-old man named Yakob Abbadura is in jail, facing charges of kidnapping, attempted rape, false imprisonment, assault and second-degree robbery. The charges all stem from Abbadura allegedly trying to force himself on the woman after she repeatedly told him “no” inside his vehicle. Police said the woman was not raped simply because she resisted during the sexual assault and suffered multiple injuries in the process.

The alleged victim was heading to bars with a friend in Oakland the night of Oct. 26 when police said they encountered Abbadura and his friend. The foursome hung out for hours that night, going to many bars and having nice conversations. When the night was over, Abbadura allegedly offered them a ride home.

He seemed well enough throughout the evening that she would call the police later. However, after dropping off the other two passengers, his attitude changed. He told her he wanted to kiss her and put his hand on her thigh, and she began to get the feeling that things were about to take a dark turn, according to police.

He tried to get out of the vehicle when it was parked near his home, but realized the doors were locked and he was trapped inside, and later called the police. That’s when Abbadura allegedly told him, “I’ll get what I want.”

During the ensuing fight, he groped the woman, forcibly touched her private parts and attempted to rape her. The woman was able to fight him off and get out of the car, but she suffered cuts and bruises all over her body during the incident, authorities said.

Prosecutors alleged that while they were fighting, Abbadura managed to steal her necklace and purse, leading to the robbery charge. Police identified Abbadura as a suspect because he gave the alleged victim’s friend his Instagram account earlier in the evening.

Abbadura has pleaded not guilty and is being held on $720,000 bail. He will appear in court next Tuesday.
