A high-level US delegation wrapped up its visit to Bangladesh today, emphasizing the need for labor reforms to strengthen democracy and sustain economic prosperity in the country.

The delegation, led by State Department Special Representative Kelly M Fay Rodriguez and Department of Labor Deputy Assistant Secretary Thea Lee, reiterated Washington’s commitment to supporting worker empowerment as a cornerstone of inclusive economic growth, gender equality, and democratic resilience.

The United States supports Bangladesh in further strengthening workers’ rights to form independent unions and bargain collectively for better working conditions, the US embassy said in a press release.

Chief Advisor Mohammed Yunus assured the delegation that labor reforms were a top priority for the interim government.
The delegation was accompanied by representatives of USAID, major US brands and global labor organizations, including leaders of Gap Inc, PVH Corp and VF Corporation, which collectively supply $1.8 billion annually from Bangladesh’s garment industry.

The delegation underlined that improving workers’ rights and ensuring safe working conditions, especially in the RMG sector, are the joint responsibilities of governments, employers and global buyers.

According to the press release, empowering workers is vital for stable employment and a living wage that allows Bangladeshi families to thrive.

The United States, which has more than 50 years of bilateral relations, reaffirmed its partnership with Bangladesh and pledged continued support for economic stability, human rights and independent unions that will benefit both workers and industries.
