Homelessness is a multifaceted and evolving problem characterized by severe housing deprivation and profound social marginalization. It extends beyond mere material poverty to include relational poverty, which includes the absence of family relationships, friendships, and social connections. This lack of social connection increasingly leads to social impoverishment and exclusion from basic health systems and human rights. The consequences of homelessness are broad and affect both individuals and society. Individuals face educational deficiencies, decreased life expectancy, and increased risk of disease and injury. Society is exposed to significant social costs, such as increased healthcare expenses, decreased public safety, and increased criminal justice expenditures. Despite its complexity, homelessness has attracted the attention of a variety of disciplines, including anthropology, sociology, psychology, medicine, and law. National and international welfare policies are implemented to combat poverty and promote social inclusion. However, given the global increase in homelessness, its impact, both social and health, has not been fully researched and adequately analysed.

This research topic aims to take a worldwide approach by recognizing and addressing global contrasts and convergences of homelessness-related issues and strategies. In line with the UN General Assembly’s 2023 report “Inclusive policies and programs to address homelessness”, the research aims to explore the multidimensional nature of homelessness and its intersection with other social problems. The goal is to advance understanding and contribute to more effective and compassionate solutions by promoting inclusive and comprehensive perspectives. Specific questions include how homelessness intersects with issues such as gender-based violence, substance use, and mental health, and what holistic policies can be implemented to address these challenges.

To further inform the global and intersectional nature of homelessness, we welcome articles that address, but are not limited to, the following themes:
– Health and Social Living Conditions: Quantitative and qualitative research on the health and/or social living conditions of homeless individuals, studies on visible and invisible dynamics, various forms of exclusion and associated stigmas, mechanisms and strategies for social inclusion.
– Intersecting Approaches: Research examining how homelessness intersects with issues such as gender-based violence, substance use, and mental health, and research on the impact of economic factors such as lack of decent employment and high energy and healthcare costs.
– Holistic Policies and Interventions: Essays on experimental projects designed and/or implemented to address various dimensions of homelessness, and policy analyzes focusing on housing, health care, social services, and legal protections.
– Case Studies: In-depth analyzes of specific aspects of homelessness and evaluation of intervention strategies and their effectiveness.
