BC man linked to Alberta woman’s death sentenced to eight years in prison

A British Columbia man convicted of aggravated assault and arson in connection with the death of a woman in Alberta has been sentenced to prison.

Philip Toner was sentenced to eight years in prison. When his sentence ends, he has two years and nine months left.

Toner, 44, was originally charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of 35-year-old Brenda Ware.

In August, he pleaded guilty to lesser charges of aggravated assault and arson.

Ware, who lived on a rural property between Sundre and Cremona, Alta., went missing in May 2021.

Her body was found later that month near her vehicle along Highway 93 in Kootenay National Park, about 50 kilometers east of Radium, BC.

Toner was arrested in B.C.’s central Okanagan region, also in May 2021.
