UNC’s Mack Brown will be dismissed after 2024 season

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCT) — Tar Heels head football coach Mack Brown will not return to the team after this season. UNC reported on Tuesday.

Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham allegedly informed Brown that he would not make the cut for next season. Brown coached UNC from 1988-97. He returned to the team in 2018 and has been there ever since.

ECU interim football coach to be promoted to head coach

Brown will coach Saturday for the team’s season finale against NC State at Kenan Stadium. There has been no word yet on whether Brown will coach in the bowl game. Brown still has three years left on his contract and the Department of Athletics will make the payment.

Mack Brown He won more games than any football coach in UNC history, and we deeply appreciate all he has done for Carolina football and our University,” said Bubba Cunningham. “Over the last six seasons – his second season in Chapel Hill – he has coached our team to six bowl berths, including the Orange Bowl He did and advised 18 NFL draft picks. He and his wife, Sally, have done an outstanding job supporting the Carolina community, including raising funds for UNC Children’s Hospital and hosting other popular events such as the Women’s Day Clinic. Both have been terrific in leading our program through some incredibly challenging moments, including the tragic passing of wide receiver. Tylee Craft this season.”

Brown released a statement regarding the firing Tuesday morning:

“While this may not be the perfect time and way I dream of going out, there will never be a perfect time. I spent 16 seasons at North Carolina and will always cherish the memories and relationships Sally and I created while serving as head coach. We’ve had the opportunity to coach and mentor some great young men and will jump at the opportunity to do so in the future. Going forward, my entire focus is on helping these players and coaches prepare for Saturday’s game against NC State and giving them the best chance to win. “We want to send these seniors out the right way, and hopefully our fans show up Saturday to do the same.”

Bubba Cunningham and Chancellor Lee H. Roberts will begin their search for a new head coach soon.
