Three people died in a traffic accident in Murang

Truck left the road due to brake failure

Three people were reported dead in a traffic accident that occurred on the Karaiani-Kangema road in Mathioya, Murang’a District.

Police confirmed the crash involved a truck that went off the road and crashed into a ditch.

Police said preliminary investigations showed that the truck’s brake failure caused the crash.

The accident occurred at 10:00 on Tuesday, November 26.

This comes just days after a 12-year-old boy died, leaving at least 25 people aged between 10 and 16 injured.

The accident occurred on Saturday evening, November 23.

The group, who were part of the football team at a mansion in Syokimau, were returning home after football training at the Football Talent Field on Ngong Road.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred when the minibus they rented went onto the ICD road.

The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road, hit a barrier and roll downhill before coming to rest on its side.

While the injured children were taken to various hospitals, it was stated that the condition of 16 of them was stable.

National Police Spokesperson Resila Onyango confirmed the details and added that their coach and two guardians (along with the driver) had also reported injuries but were being attended to.

The child, who was treated at the City Hospital, died due to the injuries he received.

To address the devastating consequences of road accidents, the Ministry of Highways and Transport, through the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), launched the National Road Safety Action Plan 2024-2028 on November 17.

The initiative aims to reduce the alarming rate of road accidents, which not only shatter families and devastate communities, but also impose a significant economic burden on the nation.

Road carnage is estimated to cost the country’s economy a staggering Sh450 billion a year.

The brunt of this burden falls disproportionately on trauma survivors and their families; Hospitals and emergency rooms also bear this burden.

The announced plan covers a comprehensive set of strategies to improve road safety for all users.

Key initiatives include improvements in road infrastructure, vehiclesafetystandards, stricter enforcement measures, increasing public awareness campaigns, post-accident care services, supporting safe driving practicessafetydatabase and monitoring and evaluation systems.
