Abingdon: Human graveyard discovered under car park

Layers of archaeological remains, including pottery dating back to the Middle Ages and Roman periods, were unearthed in six trenches.

ADAS said the human graves found under the car park were likely related to other graves previously recorded in the area.

Structural remains of a stone wall have been identified and further studies are being carried out to determine the date of the wall.

It is thought to probably correspond to the location of the ancient Bell Tower recorded in the area.

Mr McNicoll-Norbury said: “The findings are considered to be of high archaeological interest.”
