Mobile internet was suspended for two more days in nine districts

The Manipur government on Wednesday extended the suspension of mobile internet and data services in nine districts, including the troubled Jiribam district, for another two days as a precautionary measure, officials said.

Ministry of Internal Affairs officials said the suspension of mobile internet and data services has been extended for another two days even though no major incident has been reported from any of the nine districts since November 18, except for one person who went missing in Kangpokpi district on Monday. It is a preventive measure.

Home Commissioner N. Ashok Kumar, in his order, said: “In view of the current law and order situation in the state, on the apprehension that some anti-social elements may extensively use social media for transmission of images and hate speech and inciting public passions, violating the law and order situation.” “I hate video messages that can have serious consequences.”

“…as a preventive measure, the state government has temporarily suspended mobile internet and mobile data services,” the order said.

The suspension of mobile internet and data services in nine districts will be valid until 17.15 on November 29.

The nine districts, comprising both valleys and hills, where mobile internet and data services have been suspended are Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, Jiribam and Pherzawl.

Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi gave the order after six bodies of missing three children and three women were found in Jiribam district on November 15 and 16, and widespread violence and attacks by gangs began on November 16 in the valley districts, including Imphal East and Imphal West. Mobile internet and data services will be suspended in these districts for two days.

Since then, the suspension of mobile internet and data services has been periodically extended.

Meanwhile, as no major incident was reported from any district in Manipur, the Ministry of Home Affairs conditionally lifted the suspension of broadband services (landline) keeping in mind the difficulties faced by students, employees, common people, healthcare facilities, educational institutions and other offices. .

However, the Manipur government on Tuesday closed all educational institutions, including schools and universities, indefinitely in six districts under curfew.

In separate orders, Director of Education (Schools), L. Nandakumar Singh and Joint Secretary (Department of Higher and Technical Education), Daryal Juli Anal, asked the regional and district authorities to take appropriate steps to close all government, private and government-aided educational schools. institutions, including colleges and universities, until further notice.

An official from the Ministry of Education said that the decision to close schools and other educational institutions was taken in consultation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Considering the safety of students, teachers and non-teaching staff, all educational institutions in six districts – Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Kakching and Jiribam will remain closed indefinitely, he said.
