8 Arrested After North West Community Members Kill Elderly Woman Accused of Witchcraft

NORTH WEST — The South African Police Service has arrested eight members of the community following the murder of a gogon accused of witchcraft.

IOL reported that community members allegedly killed Gogo on October 22, 2024, after accusing him of being behind the murder of a 13-year-old teenager. The young man disappeared and his body was later discovered. Members of the community linked her murder to witchcraft and ostracized the old woman.

Seven men and one woman, aged between 29 and 45, were arrested on October 25 and are expected to appear before Taung Magistrates Court On October 28. The state’s MEC for Community Safety, Wessels Morweng, welcomed the arrest and said: condemned the incident.

Court sentenced the defendant of witchcraft murder
