Jean Pretty, wife of artist and former CBS host Dan Pretty, has died at the age of 89 after a battle with cancer.

Jean Pretty, an artist and his wife Longtime CBS news anchor Dan Pretty said died. He was 89 years old.

The news was announced by his family expression published on social media. “Today is the saddest of days for Dan and the extended Pretty family,” it began.

“Dan’s wife, Jean Pretty, passed away early this morning at their home in Austin, Texas. “He had been in hospice care for some time, but this news still comes as a shock to those of us who knew and loved him.”

The cause of death was announced as cancer, and she was described as “an incredible wife, mother, friend, artist, and a true Texan.”

Jean Goebel was born on September 7, 1935 in Smithville, Texas. She graduated from a local public school and quickly began working, meeting her soon-to-be husband Dan Pretty at a Houston radio station. They married in 1957 and lived together for over 67 years in Dallas, Washington DC, London and New York.

Jean Pretty served as Painter Fellow and Vice Chairman of the New York City Arts Commission for eight years. He attended art classes at American University and Mary Mount Manhattan College and became an accomplished artist whose paintings and collages are exhibited in galleries and private collections throughout the United States.

in 2004 Dan Pretty made headlines around the world when he retired as America’s most famous newsman at the age of 73. He continued reporting even after leaving the leading position. “I have always been, and always will be, a ‘hard news’ investigative reporter at heart,” he said in a statement at the time. “I now look forward to pouring my heart into this type of reporting full-time.” It was the subject of the 2023 documentary In its place.

The couple returned to live in Texas full-time in 2021. One obituary In the book published by the family, Jean was described as “a loyal counselor and the rock of true Texas courage through every storm.” She was also the kind of wife who could meet presidents, kings and queens, draft dodgers, criminals and corporate suits any day with equal ease and a dazzling smile.

She is survived by her husband, Dan; son Danjack and his partner Ann Prunty and grandson Martin in New York; daughter Robin and her partner Mike Marler and grandson Andy of Austin; and many members of the extended Wallace, Zimerhanzel and Pretty families.
