Murdered Sasha Marsden’s sister calls for time limit to be lifted to appeal light prison sentences | UK News

The sister of a teenage girl brutally murdered 11 years ago has launched a petition to remove the 28-day time limit for appealing against a murder sentence under the Extremely Light Sentencing (ULS) scheme.

Katie Brett is trying to collect 100,000 signatures for the fourth time in support of her campaign to have the issue debated in parliament.

His sister, university student Sasha Marsden, was stabbed dozens of times with a kitchen knife in January 2013 by hotel bartender David Minto, who lured her to a hotel in Blackpool with the promise of a fake job interview.

In the attack, 16-year-old Sasha was injured more than 100 times and was sexually assaulted. His body was also set on fire.

Minto, of Fleetwood, was sentenced to 35 years but not life in prison at Preston Crown Court, so he will be eligible for parole in 2048, when he is 57.

katie said England Tonight with Sarah-Jane Mee Sasha’s family, along with her mother Jayne Marsden, who died in March aged 56, said they did not know how long Minto’s sentence could be appealed and were not told of it.

He said they were focused on the verdict and the days after the hearing were “a blur” as they tried to support each other and cope with what had happened to Sasha.

28 day period

The ULS plan allows anyone to request that certain sentences be reviewed by the Attorney General’s Office; The attorney general’s office will refer the matter to the Court of Appeals if they think this is not harsh enough.

However, the referral to the Court of Appeal must be made within 28 days of the sentencing date and Katie said this did not take into account the bereavement period.

He said there shouldn’t be a time limit, “If grief has a time limit, then put a time limit on it.”

When asked why people should consider signing her petition, Katie said that if Minto was released from prison after more than 20 years, “he might be sitting next to your daughter on the bus.”

‘Cannot be rehabilitated’

“He turns on young and vulnerable people. His next victim may not be born yet. It may not be your family this time, but David Minto will attack someone again,” Katie said.

He said Minto “cannot be rehabilitated.” “What he did was pure evil,” he added.

Katie said during the hearing that she still remembers what she saw, “these images are in your head, you can’t get them out.”

“I dreamed that I was in the hotel (and) I knew what was going on because it was described in such detail,” he added.

“I’m there and I can’t help him. You feel so failed, so helpless… you didn’t protect them, and it was your job to protect them. And when you can, you have to keep living.” ‘You failed in your job of protecting your daughter and sister.’
