A 31-year-old appeared in court on Friday afternoon accused of murdering a man in Ballina, Co Mayo, on Wednesday night.

Liam O’Leary, of no fixed abode, appeared before Judge Fiona Lydon at Castlebar District Court.

John Casserly (58) was taken into custody on Wednesday night after his body was found at a flat in Tone Street, Ballina.

Arrest, charge and caution evidence was given in court this afternoon by Det Sergeant Hugh O’Donnell.

Det Sgt O’Donnell told the court he arrested the defendant at Ballina Garda station at 1.56pm today before charging him with murder.

The witness said that the defendant did not respond to the accusation after the warning.

Lawyer Gary Mulchrone said there was no bail application due to the nature of the charge.

Judge Lydon ordered the defendant remanded in custody to appear in Harristown Court on Friday, November 1.

At Mr. Mulchrone’s request, Judge Lydon recommended that the defendant seek medical attention and a psychiatric evaluation while in prison.
