Michigan’s QB vs. Reportedly planning to start Davis Warren at MSU

Michigan reportedly decided on its starting quarterback on Saturday, and it’s not Jack Tuttle.

Former receiver Davis Warren is expected to start against in-state rival Michigan State (7:30 p.m., Big Ten Network), according to a report Friday evening. From Matt Zenitz of 247Sports.

The Wolverines have not officially announced the move; It’s his third change at quarterback this season after benching Warren in Week 3. The former backup started Michigan’s first three games but threw six interceptions despite a 66 percent completion rate.

Michigan (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten) is looking for a boost from its EQB position after trying out tight end Alex Orji and seventh-year veteran Jack Tuttle since then. Tuttle started last week in a 21-7 loss to Illinois, throwing an interception and turning the ball over and committing four turnovers in six quarters of play this season.

On Monday night, Michigan coach Sherrone Moore suggested Tuttle give him another shot — “I think Jack’s going to be the guy right now,” he said — but said the decision would be made later in the week based on his performance in practice.

This isn’t the first time Warren has outmaneuvered the competition in practice. He beat out Orji for the starting role in preseason camp and started Michigan’s first three games, then threw two interceptions in a 31-12 loss to Texas and three interceptions in a 28-18 win over Arkansas State.

Despite the turnovers, Warren has been the most accurate player of the group and gives the Michigan offense the look of a deep threat in the passing game. If he can get the start on Saturday, the Wolverines’ troubled quarterback carousel will come full circle.
