Hong Kong police search crypto store after woman scammed Tether out of HK,000

Hong Kong police called cryptocurrency Currency exchange shop in Mong Kok on Saturday after a woman said she was scammed out of nearly HK$93,000 (US$11,970) worth of virtual money by a man she met online.

A source said the 26-year-old woman met a man on social media who claimed he could convert the digital currency Tether (USDT) into Hong Kong dollars for her.

The insider said the victim visited the store at 1pm and transferred 12,000 Tether (about HK$93,660) to a cryptocurrency wallet.

According to the source, the man told the victim to stay in the store until his co-worker arrived with his cash. No one returned by 3:55 p.m., prompting him to contact law enforcement.

Police listed the case as obtaining property by fraud. No arrests were made.

The Mong Kok district crime division is handling the investigation.
