Traffic accident near SIU Recreation Center leads to arrest

CARBONDALE, Illinois (KFVS) – A crash in Carbondale, Illinois Friday night led to the arrest of a Louisiana man.

The Carbondale Police Department said officers were called to the 300 block of E. Grand Avenue near the Southern Illinois University Recreation Center around 8:45 p.m., Oct. 25, for a crash and report of shots fired. The SIU Department of Public Safety also responded.

The teams detained many people at the scene.

Police said three vehicles were involved and no one was injured.

During the investigation, police teams detected damage to one of the vehicles as a result of gunfire. A gun was also seized.

Officers learned that the incident stemmed from a road rage incident between parties who did not know each other on S. Illinois Avenue.

Police arrested one of the people involved, 28-year-old Mohommad J. Muhammad of Metairie, Louisiana.

Muhammad was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon and was incarcerated in the Jackson County Jail.

All other parties were released without charges.

This investigation is ongoing.
