The Nigerian Police Force has distanced itself from the unauthorized use of its uniform and insignia by social media influencer Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan.

Police said they launched an extensive investigation to determine the source of the uniform and insignia worn by VeryDarkMan in one of his videos.

In the video in question, the influencer was seen wearing full police uniforms while describing himself as a social media police officer, not an activist.

Condemning his action, the police said that the influencer’s action was contrary to Article 251 of the Criminal Code Act and Article 133 of the Criminal Code Act.

According to the statement on the official X page of the police: “The Nigerian Police Force strongly condemns the unauthorized use of official uniforms and equipment by Mr. Martins Otse, an online personality popularly known as “VDM”, in a video posted on social media. platforms.

“The Force strictly distances itself from this unauthorized portrayal and has launched a full investigation to establish the source of the Police equipment used as well as the authority under which it was acting.

“It is important to remind the public that the unauthorized use of police uniforms, insignia or equipment constitutes a criminal offense and is subject to strict penalties, as set out in Article 251 of the Criminal Code and Article 133 of the Criminal Code. .

“While the Nigerian Police Force recognizes and supports the creativity of young Nigerians in the field of content creation, we strongly caution against misuse of Police uniforms or symbols. Unauthorized use of these items undermines the values ​​and integrity of the Force and will not be tolerated.”
