US Attorney General appoints election oversight officer for WNY polls

As the Nov. 5 general election approaches, U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross appointed Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul E. Bonanno to oversee election integrity efforts in the Western District of New York. Ross made the announcement Friday, underscoring the Justice Department’s commitment to a safe and fair voting process.

Named as the District Election Officer (DEO), Bonanno will handle complaints about voting rights, threats of violence against election workers, and potential election fraud. Will coordinate with the Department of Justice in Washington, DC to ensure rapid and effective responses to reported issues.

“Every citizen should be able to vote without interference or discrimination, and every vote should be counted in a fair and free election,” Ross said. “Similarly, election officials must be able to work without facing unlawful threats of violence. “The Department of Justice is committed to protecting the integrity of the election process.”

The Department of Justice’s Election Day Program plays a critical role in preventing voter intimidation, discrimination, and election fraud. The program aims to increase trust and transparency in the election system by encouraging public reporting of suspected federal election law violations through local contacts like Bonanno.

Federal law protects against a range of crimes, including intimidation, vote buying, impersonation, vote tampering, and ballot manipulation. Voters also have special protections under the Voting Rights Act, which guarantees assistance to people who need assistance due to disability or language barrier.

Ross reiterated the importance of the electoral process, calling it “the cornerstone of American democracy.” He emphasized the need for public participation in reporting concerns to protect election integrity. On election day, Bonanno will be available during voting hours at 716-843-5700 to respond to complaints and questions.

The FBI will also have agents on standby in field offices, ready to investigate any reports of election-related misconduct. The local FBI field office in Buffalo can be reached at 716-856-7800. The public can also contact the Civil Rights Division in Washington, DC online at: civilrights.justice.gov or call 800-253-3931 to report federal voting rights violations.

Ross called on voters to be careful and proactive, emphasizing that public support is vital in maintaining free and fair elections. But he cautioned that in cases of immediate threats or violence, individuals should call 911 first, as state and local authorities are better positioned to quickly respond to emergencies at polling places.
