Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says 1 person dead, 1 injured in Westside shooting

The shooting of two men, one fatal, at a Westside area park Saturday evening has prompted an investigation by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit.

According to JSO, around 7:30 p.m., off-duty officers at the park at 7600 Wiley Road heard gunshots and quickly responded to the scene. Upon arrival, they found two adult male victims, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD) personnel assisted in transporting a victim with non-life-threatening injuries to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, the other victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The JSO Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Unit led the investigation with additional support from the Medical Examiner’s Office and the State’s Attorney’s Office.

Authorities stated that this appeared to be an isolated incident and assured the public that there was no ongoing threat to the community.
