A driver crashed his truck into a crowd at a bus stop in central Israel on Sunday, killing one man and injuring more than two dozen people, medics and police said.

In a separate incident, Israeli soldiers killed a man who tried to stab them during an “anti-terrorism” operation near Jerusalem, which the military described as a “terrorist attack”.

The truck crash occurred on Ahron Yariv Boulevard in Ramat HaSharon, near Tel Aviv, Israel’s commercial capital.

In a statement, the police said that the initial findings of the police showed that the truck driver also hit a bus that stopped to drop off passengers at the same station.

At least 29 people were injured, many in serious condition, emergency service providers Magen David Adom said in a statement.

Police did not explain whether this was an attack or not, but stated that civilians at the scene “shot the truck driver and neutralized him.”

It was stated that one of the injured later died in the hospital where he was taken for treatment.

Paramedic Elior Yosef, who came to the bus stop after the crash, said he saw eight people “stuck under the truck.”

In his statement, Magen David Adom was quoted as saying, “A few more injured were either lying or walking next to the truck.”

Officers and ambulances rushed to the scene; AFP journalists saw police cordoning off the area and a helicopter flying overhead as medics helped the injured.

Palestinian militant group Hamas said in a statement that the heroic attack “carried out near Mossad headquarters” was “a response to the crimes committed by the Zionist occupation against Palestinians.”

On the other hand, a person who tried to stab a group of soldiers was killed in the Palestinian town of Hisma, near Jerusalem.

In the statement made by the army, without specifying the identity of the attacker, it was said: “A terrorist quickly advanced with his vehicle towards Israeli army soldiers who were carrying out anti-terrorism activities near the Hizma region.”

“The terrorist took a knife out of his vehicle and attempted a knife attack. Soldiers neutralized the terrorist and prevented the terrorist attack attempt.” In the statement, it was stated that no soldiers were injured.

Since the start of the war in Gaza on October 7 last year, there have been numerous attacks by Palestinian militants in Israel.

At least 30 people, including Israeli soldiers, have been killed in such attacks in Israel, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

Sunday’s events came as Israel held ceremonies to mark the Hebrew calendar anniversary of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack that sparked ongoing wars in Gaza and Lebanon.
