2 Reasons Why Lonnie Walker Should Re-sign with the Celtics

2 Reasons Why Lonnie Walker Should Re-sign with the Celtics

Lonnie Walker did not make the Celtics’ opening night roster. But there are some indications that his time in Boston may not be over. Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer approved He said the Celtics could add him to their roster this season, even if not right away.

Even before Fischer’s latest report on Walker, there were signs that Walker’s time with the Celtics could be coming.

1. Walker was waived after cuts in training camp

The Celtics’ waiving of Dmytro Skapintsev, Ron Harper Jr., Jay Scrubb and Hason Ward didn’t create any shockwaves, but what was notable was that Walker wasn’t waived at the same time.

Walker was waived two days later. The Celtics’ delay in his release may have been out of respect, knowing Walker had legitimate NBA experience to his name compared to other cuts. However, he had clearly done enough for the Celtics to decide what to do with him.

While it wouldn’t surprise anyone if the Celtics cut him, it wasn’t an easy decision for them. The postponement of his release proves this.

2. Walker did not join the Maine Celtics

Walker signed a contract with the Celtics that will pay him a large sum of money if he joins the Celtics G-League affiliate for 60 days. This opportunity allows him to earn this much money and then parlay it into a standard NBA contract in Boston.

Unfortunately, the Celtics announced who is on the Maine roster and wouldn’t you know it, Walker is not on it.

Perhaps he could join the team at a later date, or this could be a sign that the Celtics have already told Walker they intend to add him. It’s just a matter of when.

Now let’s be practical. If that’s the plan, who knows how long Walker will actually be willing to wait to be added to the active roster? If so, it’s a good thing he’s been so patient. But doing so risks causing other options to dry up; Which may not be the smartest move if he waits too long.

Walker needs to be in the NBA, and adding him would give the Celtics a boost in their quest for a repeat. He could rejoin the Celtics, but expectations must be kept in check. There is a lot of noise surrounding an actor who is likely to be part of the famous “Stay Ready” group.
