Jerod Mayo explains how QB got into protocol

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo clarified why Maye was evaluated first in the team’s blue pop-up medical tent and then in the locker room.

“He was relegated from the league. Mayo said they wanted to do further evaluation on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show.” “When I got there at halftime, (Maye) wanted to get back on the field but obviously he didn’t pass the test.

“And I won’t get into it too much, but he also went out there and threw some good balls, then I think he put it in the protocol.”

Maye was slow to get up after taking a hit to Sherwood’s helmet while sliding on the tail end of an 18-yard tackle. The Patriots ran one more play before the quarter ended.

After intermission at the end of the quarter, Maye remained on the field for three more plays before the Patriots were forced to punt – a pass, a sack and an incomplete pass dropped by wide receiver Kayshon Boutte.

When the Patriots returned to the sideline, Maye entered the medical tent with an independent neurotrauma consultant from the sideline and left and went to the locker room.

Mayo said he saw no warning signs from Maye after the helmet-to-helmet impact.

“I didn’t. I was surprised when (head coach Jim) Whalen told me later that he had to go to the medical tent because he threw a couple good balls, and I thought he was still pretty smart about that stuff,” Mayo said. “But frankly, taking him out of the game and putting him in the protocol is above my pay grade.”

Maye did not leave the locker room and was taken out of the game at the end of the half.

Mayo said on WEEI that he wasn’t sure when Maye would return.

The rookie QB must follow the NFL’s return to participation protocol.

Stage 1: Symptom limited activity

“The player is advised to rest, limit or, if necessary, avoid activities that increase or worsen symptoms (both physical and cognitive). Under the supervision of athletic training personnel, limited stretching and balance training can be performed and, if tolerated, light aerobic exercises can be started.

Stage 2: Aerobic exercise

“Under the direct supervision of the team’s medical staff, the player should gradually begin cardiovascular exercises and also participate in dynamic stretching and balance training. “After completion of Phase Two, neurocognitive and balance testing may be administered and results should be interpreted as a return to baseline.”

Stage 3: Football specific exercise

“The player continues supervised cardiovascular exercises that are augmented and can mimic sport-specific activities, and supervised strength training is initiated. The player is allowed to train with the team in sport-specific exercises for 30 minutes or less with constant and careful monitoring.”

Stage 4: Club-based contactless training

“The player continues cardiovascular, strength and balance training, exercises specific to team-based sports, and participates in non-contact football activities (e.g. throwing, catching, running and other position-specific activities). Neurocognitive and balance testing should be completed no later than the end of Phase Four, and results should be interpreted as a return to baseline.”

Stage 5: Full football event

“For full football activity involving contact, the player must be examined by the Independent Neurological Consultant (INC) appointed to his Club, with the permission of the Club doctor. If the INC agrees with the Club doctor that the player’s concussion has been resolved, the player may participate in his Club’s next training or match.”

If Maye doesn’t clear the NFL’s concussion protocol by Sunday, Jacoby Brissett will start against the Titans.
