Man found dead in parked car after shooting in NE Portland

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – A man is dead following a shooting in northeast Portland’s Sabin neighborhood Sunday morning, according to police.

Just after 2 a.m., officers with the Portland Police Bureau responded to the 4500 block of Northeast 20th Street after neighbors reported hearing gunshots. Police arrived at the scene and found a man dead in a car parked at the curb and no suspects.

Brian Simmons lives in the area and manages an apartment complex near where the attack occurred.

“(Tenants) have some concerns, you know, some uneasiness,” said Simmons. “They asked questions like, ‘What are we going to do?’

A man was arrested Saturday after an overnight standoff with police at an apartment building in southwest Portland, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

Simmons said he has lived in the neighborhood for 30 years and described it as “generally safe.”

He said it was sad that something like this could happen so close to home, but he wasn’t shocked.

“Unfortunately, as this happens more often, you start to get a little more numb,” said Simmons. “I manage a lot of properties in the city and I can tell you there are a lot of challenges throughout the city.”

Another resident, Michael Harris, said he was not surprised by the gunshots when he woke up and did not feel threatened. He said acts of violence like this are a reflection of a larger problem that affects not only his local community but the entire country.

“Nobody likes to see this violence happen in their neighborhood, but it’s not typical of what’s going on in our society in general,” Harris said. “This is something that is more common in our society because of the prevalence of easy access to firearms.”

While the investigation into the attack continues, the police did not detain anyone.
