McKinleyville man arrested for robbery and attempted theft at local store

Deputies with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) arrested Michael Armas, 49, of McKinleyville last week following an attempted robbery and burglary.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) responded to a report of an attempted robbery at ACE Hardware on Central Avenue around 10 a.m. He said a suspect, identified as Armas, tried to leave the store with several power tools and used pepper spray on employees. before fleeing in a pickup truck.

HCSO said deputies later responded to Armas’ home, but he did not comply with their commands, which led to an arrest warrant being issued.

Later that day, at 8:30 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a man attempting to enter a home on Van Wycke Street. HCSO said the resident reported that he had never interacted with Armas before and did not know who he was. Deputies arrived at the scene and detained Armas following an arrest warrant and attempted break-in.

Ultimately, Armas was booked into the Humboldt County Department of Corrections on a charge of second-degree robbery, the sheriff’s office said.
