Five reasons why the Cowboys are starting a rebuild

The Dallas Cowboys, who lost 30-24 to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night, are 3-4 and 2.5 games behind in the NFC East.

While we don’t have a clear understanding of what the future holds for the Cowboys beyond this season, here are five reasons why they should begin a rebuild:

Free up container space

Following the extensions and big contracts given to quarterback Dak Prescott and star receiver CeeDee Lamb, Dallas will enter the 2025 season with just over $25 million in cap space. 23rd worst in the NFL.

Dallas has players it could trade to free up money to spend in free agency. That includes cornerback Trevon Diggs and Malik Hooker, who are both under contract through 2026 and beyond. Both are part of Dallas’ secondary. 21st most passing yards per game (218) and 26th in total yards per game allowed (372.6).

Get more draft picks

Considering Dallas is nowhere near a playoff team, it could certainly help with trading players whose contracts are expiring.

Ezekiel Elliott, DeMarcus Lawrence, Brandin Cooks and Jourdan Lewis are all players whose contracts are expiring and could be traded for draft compensation. Currently, the Cowboys will have their own six draft picks as well as four compensation picks. We bring the total to 10.

Trading at least three players with expiring contracts would get Dallas closer to 15 draft picks, which would be an extraordinary number of picks for a team that is starting to rebuild.

Young core to be built around

In addition to older players to be traded, there are also young players to be created in Dallas.

Dak Prescott is the quarterback of the future. He has several young guns to be with him in Dallas for the foreseeable future, including Rico Dowdle, receivers CeeDee Lamb and KaVontae Turpin, and tight end prospect Jake Ferguson.

With these pieces on the offensive side of the ball and the ability to go out and trade for more draft picks, it makes perfect sense for Dallas to make these trades and start rebuilding their future.

Not a championship candidate

Dallas is not as good as the teams they are chasing to make the playoffs.

The Cowboys’ three wins this season have been against the Browns, Steelers and Giants. The combined record of these three teams is 9-13, with the Steelers carrying over 50% of those nine wins.

Dallas has struggled against playoff-caliber teams like the 49ers, Ravens and Lions. If the ultimate goal is to win the Super Bowl and the team isn’t close to achieving that, it’s time to trade players and begin a rebuild.

New coach will probably arrive

It’s no secret that this season in the NFL could be the last for Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy.

The Cowboys failed to make the playoffs during McCarthy’s tenure, and as former head coach Jason Garrett’s time with the team shows, the lack of playoff success isn’t flying in Dallas. McCarthy as a head coach 11-11 career record in the playoffs, including a 1-3 mark with Dallas.which is definitely not good enough.

This could all change if Dallas comes out and wins its next four games and takes control of the league, but that’s not a good scenario for the upcoming schedule. The Cowboys should seriously consider starting a rebuild and looking to 2025 and beyond.
