Man accused of shooting at deputies in Wood County has pleaded not guilty

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wisconsin (WSAW) – A 40-year-old Wisconsin Rapids man accused of shooting at officers during a traffic stop in Wisconsin Rapids has pleaded not guilty.

Clinton Mayotte is charged with eight felonies, including initial counts of attempted first-degree premeditated murder.

Investigators said in the early morning hours of Aug. 20, officers attempted to locate him after he left the scene following a domestic incident. He was eventually spotted by deputies in neighboring Portage County. Investigators said he did not stop when officers tried to pull him over. He is accused of opening fire with a gun and attacking squad vehicles. No officers were injured.

His vehicle was disabled near 8th Street and East Grand Avenue in Wisconsin Rapids, according to the original news release. Investigators said he continued shooting at officers and fled the scene. It was spotted by a drone a short time later on a rooftop in the area of ​​9th and Grape Street. Investigators said he fired at officers while on the roof. Officers returned fire and he was taken into custody and transported to the hospital.

Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in the incident. Including Portage and Wood County Sheriff’s Office, Grand Rapids, Nekoosa, Stevens Point and Marshfield Police Department.

The Criminal Investigation Department is conducting the investigation.

He is being held on $2.11 million cash bond. He faces additional charges in Portage County.

A religious court hearing is scheduled for January 28 in Wood County.
