Detectives are scrambling to find solutions to a rising number of homicides amid allegations the police department is underfunded.

Two murder cases are reported every day, putting the police in a difficult situation.

Although some of them were solved, most of them remained unresolved for a long time.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja said there had been a slight increase in murder cases in recent months.

He said comparative analysis of homicide cases reported from August to October for 2022-24 showed a slight increase.

339 murder cases have been recorded so far in 2024; 336 cases were recorded in 2023 and 341 in 2022.

Criminal Investigation Department Director Mohamed Amin said they could have stopped the killings if they had prior knowledge of the plans.

“This is something that someone plans to do or in some cases may happen and no one can stop it. It will be difficult to stop the same unless we have prior knowledge,” he added.

Amin said that they are determined to address the cases reported to them so far.

A full-fledged homicide unit is equipped with personnel and equipment to help solve cases.

There were 3,056 murder cases in 2022, 3,281 in 2021, 3,111 in 2020, 2,971 in 2019 and 2,856 in 2018.

The homicide squad seems overwhelmed by the increase in cases.

The latest tragedy involves Wells Fargo human resources manager Willis Ayieko, whose body was found dumped in a creek on the border of Yala’s Siaya and Kakamega counties on Oct. 21.

Ayieko’s eyes were gouged out and her ears were cut off.

His family, who saw the body immediately after it was found, said that the murderers also tortured him.

Police said the body was in a decomposed state when it was found by a student.

There were bruises on his face and stomach, indicating that he had been dragged over a rough surface.

Ayieko, 52, whose gun was also stolen, was a licensed gun owner, according to Nyanza regional crime investigation officer Lenny Kisaka.

The reason for the murder has not yet been determined and no suspect has been arrested.
