‘Building relationships, creating traditions:’ Chapin gives back to community through pumpkin patch fall tradition

CHAPIN, SC (WIS) – Fall is upon us, which means pumpkins, costumes, and ‘Skelly the Ghost Dog.’ All the sights you can see when you visit the Ghost Dog Pumpkin Patch in Chapin.

Owner Rodney Spires said this is his first year operating the pumpkin patch, but he hopes it will be the start of a long-lasting tradition.

“I had no idea we could do this well, and it wasn’t because of me, it was because of Skelly here,” Spiers said.

Spiers wanted this pumpkin patch to be a way to give back to the community, so he’s donating 10 percent of the profits to Pawmetto Lifeline.

“It’s all about the kids and the fundraiser, other than that there’s no making money or anything like that. It’s about seeing kids having fun, listening to ‘Monster Mash’ and things like that. “And because I was able to donate a lot of it to Pawmetto Lifeline,” Spiers said.

Spiers is passionate about finding homes for abandoned dogs, which is why Pawmetto Lifeline holds a special place in her heart. Over the years, the Spiers adopted dogs that didn’t have much time left, but gave them a loving home and a fun job.

“I always take the oldest and ugliest. They only last about two years, so it’s a quick changeover. So I thought the best way to give back would be to have my dog or two work for me!

Beyond the donation to Pawmetto Lifeline, Spiers is giving free pumpkins to first responders and linemen who helped during the recent storm as a way to thank them for their service. He said how giving back to the community can bring the business motto to life.

“Building relationships, creating traditions. So that’s what we’re trying to do,” Spiers said. “It’s great and makes me feel so good, and being able to donate to Pawmetto Lifeline at the same time is doubly awesome!”
