Ministry of Internal Affairs to cancel identity and travel documents of Chidimma Adetshina and her mother

JOHANNESBURG – The Ministry of Internal Affairs has announced that it will cancel the identity and travel documents of former Miss South Africa contestant Chidimma Adetshina and her Mozambican-born mother.

They also face possible fraud charges.

On Tuesday, the ministry informed Parliament’s portfolio committee that the investigation had been completed Transferred to Hawks.

Adetshina’s case was brought to Parliament in August after the public questioned her heritage and nationality after she became a finalist in the Miss SA pageant.

Home Affairs Director General Tommy Makhode said the Adetshinas did not respond to Monday’s deadline to submit representations as to why they should retain South African national documents.

Makhode said authorities visited a house registered in Adetshina’s name to trace her mother.

The department believes he is still in South Africa.

However, she cannot explain how she could have gone to Nigeria last month to support her daughter in the Miss Universe Nigeria contest, which she won.

The ministry said photos taken at the event and posted on social media confirmed that Adetshina’s mother had left South Africa during the investigation. Nothing is said about his Nigerian-born father.

Deputy Director General for Immigration Albert Matsaung said: “We could not find any trace of the passport he used to come from Mozambique to South Africa on his way to Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, social media posts on Monday show that Adetshina is heading to Mexico from the United States, where she participated in the Miss Universe pageant.
