macmini received a major update today; Apple is introducing a slimmed-down design that reduces the size by more than five inches to take up less space on the desktop or shelf. Despite the size change, the “Mac mini” uses Apple’s most powerful M-series chips, including the new M4 Pro.

Combining the smaller form factor and updated chips required a redesigned thermal architecture. The stand of the “Mac mini” allows it to draw air from the surrounding environment, and the air can circulate throughout before being expelled through the bottom stand.

Apple says air is routed to every level of the system, and combined with the power efficiency of the M4 chips, the “Mac mini” can “tackle intense workloads at blazing speeds.”

The redesigned “Mac mini” is five inches square and two inches tall. It’s longer than the previous version but 2.75 inches smaller. Rumors suggested it could be this small AppleTV (which is 3.66 inches), but it turned out to be slightly larger than that.

The M4 Pro hasn’t been benchmarked yet, but it has a 14-core CPU and up to 20-core GPU, which is up to twice as powerful as the M4 GPU. 3D visualizations in Blender are up to 2.9x faster than in Blender. M2 Pro and motion graphics are rendered up to 2x faster.
