Lions’ Jameson Williams faced police for carrying gun in car just 2 weeks before PED suspension

Nearly two weeks before he was suspended for violating the NFL’s performance enhancement policy, Jameson Williams He almost went to jail.

Williams said the gun was “for protection” because he lives in Detroit. After being told he would be arrested for carrying a concealed weapon, he was eventually handcuffed and placed in the back of a police cruiser.

Eventually, Williams was released after a sergeant made some calls to higher-ups. The sergeant had the Lions logo in the background of his phone. According to body camera footage.

The sergeant told responding officers he was “very angry” at both, but Detroit Police Commander Michael McGinnis said it was said in a “jovial way.”

After a lieutenant told the sergeant that the brothers could be released, the sergeant thanked the lieutenant, saying he was a “(expletive) hero.” That’s when Williams was removed from the handcuffs and released without further trouble.

The police department is now investigating why Williams and his brother were released.

“I believe there was probable cause for the arrest and he was arrested by the patrol officer,” McGinnis said. “And so he should have been transported to the Detroit Detention Center and processed.”

“I want to know if the fact that this person was a Detroit Lions player had any bearing on the decision.” he added, saying police Chief James White had “moved on” from the ordeal.

The Lions said in a statement that Williams “immediately notified us that he was a passenger during a routine traffic stop on October 8.”

“We discussed the incident with him and informed the league of what we knew,” the statement said. “We understand that he was released without incident or citation. We understand that the Detroit Police Department is now revisiting the matter. Jameson has retained an attorney and out of respect for the legal process, we will not comment further.”
