Tennessee couple recovering after serious crash in Etowah County

ETOWAH COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – A Tennessee man is in serious condition after a really bad crash in Etowah County.

Last Friday, Malia Duarte and her fiancé Austin Bowman were traveling from Tennessee to Cropwell, Alabama, for her father’s birthday. While traveling southbound on I-59 in Etowah County, a trailer’s tire came loose and flew into the windshield, causing serious damage to the truck.

Austin was seriously injured and taken to Riverview Hospital in Gadsden and later flown to UAB, where he was listed in serious condition. Malia says all the bones in her face were broken and she is now sedated for her own comfort. Malia, who walked away with minor bumps and bruises, says this accident could have been prevented.

“I think it was a freak accident. I don’t think it was intentional, whoever was making a point of this. I think it was negligent because I think they underestimated the power that tires have and I think you shouldn’t cheap out on your equipment, you should check your equipment before you travel,” Malia said.

Malia said Austin was able to open his eyes today and has a long road to recovery. there is one GoFundMe Prepared for Austin’s care.
