To commemorate this exciting launch, Barbie South Africa is teaming up with media personality and entrepreneur Kirya Gangiah to shine a light on the importance of diversity and representation in South Africa.

Since 1959, Barbie has been inspiring generations of children to dream big and believe in their limitless potential. This latest collaboration reaffirms Barbie’s commitment to honoring diverse cultures and deeply connecting with people around the world.

Barbie Diwali doll represents a beautiful fusion of tradition and modernity, celebrating one of India’s most beloved festivals, the Festival of Lights.

“This Diwali, we are excited to highlight the beauty of diversity through the launch of this doll in South Africa,” said Terusha Naidoo, Mattel South Africa marketing manager.

India’s vibrant cultural heritage

“The Barbie Diwali doll represents India’s vibrant cultural heritage, bringing it to life on a global stage and celebrating the nearly 1.5 million Indians in Southern Africa who have been part of the rich fabric of our country since the mid-1800s.”

“Diwali plays an important role in the lives of families across the country and has been an inspiring opportunity for children to celebrate their heritage. I believe that the launch of Barbie Diwali Doll will provide an opportunity for the entire Indian community – my community – to feel accepted, seen and represented,” says media personality and entrepreneur Kirya Gangiah.

“Barbie has always inspired children to dream of limitless possibilities, and they have put those words into action, offering the older generation the kind of validation they seek and the younger generation the nod they need to embrace their own dreams. “Cultural identity in a modern, multicultural society like ours,” he said.

Fashion and culture

While fashion and culture go hand in hand, Barbie’s partnership with Anita Dongre is extremely influential; because it introduces the Barbie Diwali doll dressed in Dongre’s special blend of contemporary design and traditional Indian craftsmanship.

Barbie Diwali doll flaunts Dongre’s Moonlight Flower ensemble: lehenga skirt, floral Koti vest and choli top, adorned with intricate patterns of dahlia, jasmine and Indian lotus, symbols of beauty and strength. Complete with gold bangles and sparkling earrings, the doll reflects the bright glow of Diwali lights.

“As we celebrate Diwali, Barbie and I encourage our fans around the world to embrace the beautiful heritage of Indian fashion and culture,” said Anita Dongre.

“This partnership is a perfect alignment of values; my brand has always been focused on empowerment, and Barbie represents the ultimate symbol of unlimited potential for girls everywhere.”
