According to the prosecutor of the case, there was a racist motive behind the attack. Finnish media had previously reported that the suspect had a swastika on his gun and was wearing Nazi-themed clothing.

The 15-year-old suspect admitted to investigators during the pre-trial investigation that he carried out the attack, but denied trying to kill the victim. In June, the Oulu District Court ordered the suspect to undergo a psychological examination.

The trial will begin on Monday, November 11, at the Oulu District Court.
