PBOT will begin towing vehicles without visible license plates (VIN)

PORTLAND, Oregon (KPTV) – Starting November 12, the Portland Bureau of Transportation will begin towing vehicles that do not have a visible vehicle identification number and at least one visible license plate.

To avoid getting towed, Portlanders want to make sure their VIN is visible.

On most cars the number can be found on the windshield. The new policy requires this number to be visible; Therefore, make sure that there are no ornaments, papers or even dirt obstructing the dashboard.

Second, you need to make sure at least one of your license plates is visible.

Most drivers in Oregon are required to have two license plates, one in the front and one in the rear. However, some vehicles, such as motorcycles and mopeds, only need one license plate on the back, and you want to make sure there is nothing covering the license plate numbers.

As for drivers of SUVs, sedans or trucks, if your vehicle doesn’t have a front license plate you may not get pulled over, but you may receive a ticket and a $115 fine.

The goal of the new PBOT policy is to help parking enforcement officers clear vehicles that violate the recently amended city code, including abandoned vehicles.

If you believe your vehicle has been towed, contact Portland Police Auto Records at 503-823-0044.
