Wind warnings issued for parts of Vancouver Island

A pair of wind advisories went into effect on Vancouver Island Wednesday morning, and the federal weather agency said conditions could cause damage.

Areas covered by Environment Canada warnings include eastern Vancouver Island from Nanoose Bay to Campbell River and Greater Victoria.

“A Pacific frontal system approaching Vancouver Island will produce strong southeast winds,” the warning reads. “Winds will be strong this morning and will ease in the afternoon as the front weakens.”

Peak winds are forecast to reach 90 km/h in open coastal areas and near the Haro Strait, with gusts reaching 70 km/h.

The agency says strong winds can blow loose objects around, causing injury or damage. Power outages and falling tree branches are also possible.
