Thousands of people flocked to Shell Energy Stadium during a rally organized by Vice President Kamala Harris on October 25. It was reported that 30,000 people attended the event, filling the stadium in Houston’s Second Ward. In reality, it felt like so much more as lines wrapped around the stadium. Those in attendance witnessed something remarkable: In a rare political speech, hometown hero Beyoncé endorsed Harris’ presidential campaign.

Reproductive Freedom Rally Roe v. Following the reversal of the Wade case, the focus was on abortion rights. GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump has appointed three Supreme Court justices who voted to repeal Roe in 2022. Texas had already passed a near-total abortion ban in 2021, but the Supreme Court’s decision triggered legislation in Texas that makes abortion a crime punishable by life in prison. prison. There are no exceptions for rape or incest; There is little funding available just to save the mother’s life.

The rally included moving testimonies from people affected by these laws. One of the speakers, Yesenia Gamez of San Antonio, learned she was pregnant in October 2021, just two weeks after her husband was fired. She was being treated for an ectopic pregnancy, but that was before the ban. The woman, who is currently undergoing her second in vitro fertilization treatment, shared her fears about what might happen if the Supreme Court targets in vitro fertilization just like abortion.

In vitro fertilization helps many couples and individuals become pregnant, and one participant cited this as a reason to support Harris. “As a gay American father who conceived through IVF, the Supreme Court is on the ballot and I do not want it to be filled with (more) right-wing extremists who will take away my rights,” the author and talk show host wrote. Host Andy Cohen.

Similarly, Beyoncé cited parenthood as a reason for supporting Harris. “I’m not here as a celebrity,” he said. “I’m not here as a politician. I’m here as a mother. A mother who cares deeply about the world my children and all our children live in, a world where we have the freedom to control our bodies.”

“It’s time to sing a new song,” he said. “The old notes of collapse, discord and despair no longer resonate. Our loved ones from the generations before us are whispering a prophecy, a quest, a call, an anthem. “Our moment is now,” he said. “So let’s do this. Ladies and gentlemen, let’s give a big, loud welcome in Texas to the next president of the United States, Vice President Kamala Harris.

Harris took the stage to loud applause, warning of the consequences of Trump’s policies on reproductive rights. “When Donald Trump became president, he hand-picked three members of the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade, and they did so according to his intent,” Harris said. “More than 20 states now have Trump abortion bans. “One in three American women lives in a state where Trump has implemented an abortion ban, including every state in the South except Texas and Virginia.”

“Many of these bans result in a woman being denied care until she is near death,” Harris added. “Many have no exceptions for rape and incest, which are immoral. Let’s face it: One need not abandon one’s faith to believe that the government should not control one’s body. If he wishes, he will talk to his priest, priest, rabbi or imam; not with some people in the state legislature.”

Harris criticized the increase in abortion restrictions across the South. He noted that many states that have passed these laws are among the worst states in terms of maternal mortality rates. “These extremist leaders, who have neglected prenatal care, birth care, and postpartum care for decades, now claim to care about women and children. Well, I have a question for them: Where were you?”

“Where were you when it came to prioritizing the care of women and children? Where were you when it came to helping pregnant women and new mothers? Where were you when it came to affordable child care? he asked. “The same extremist leaders refused to expand the child tax credit that lifts half of America’s children out of poverty. They blocked proposals to reduce child care costs for working parents and tried to cut WIC and SNAP benefits for low-income mothers and children. Hypocrisy abounds.”

Harris declared Houston “ground zero in the fight for reproductive care” and urged Houstonians to vote. “Your vote is your voice,” he said. “Your voice is your power.”
