House COVID-19 panel directs Andrew Cuomo to possible investigation for lying to Congress: report

The House Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic sent a referral to the Justice Department on Wednesday night for possible prosecution of former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The New York Times reportedAmid allegations that he lied to Congress.

Cuomo, who was governor during the Covid-19 outbreak, issued a statement proxy In 2020, it required nursing homes in the state to accept untested or possibly infectious patients. It resulted in the deaths of more than 15,000 people.

The panel reportedly accused Cuomo of participating in a “conscious, calculated effort” and lying behind closed doors to avoid responsibility for thousands of nursing home deaths due to COVID-19.

Cuomo had testified to the panel that he had not reviewed the State Department of Health report on nursing home deaths, but the New York Times reported that Cuomo reviewed the report and helped write parts of its first draft.

The guidance was signed by subcommittee chairman Brad Wenstrup, according to the release.

“Mr. Wenstrup stated in the redirect that Cuomo made false statements to the select subcommittee, which appeared to be a conscious and calculated effort to absolve himself of responsibility. “The Department of Justice should consider Mr. Cuomo’s prior alleged misconduct when considering whether to charge him for the disclosed misrepresentations.”

Richard Azzopardi, a spokesman for the former governor, defended Cuomo in a statement to the media outlet, claiming that he stated that he did not remember having a role in the report.

“This taxpayer-funded nonsense is an illegal use of Congress’ investigative power,” Azzopardi said. “The governor said he didn’t remember because he didn’t remember. “The committee lied in its guidance, just as it lied to the public and the press.”

The criminal referral does not carry any legal weight, and it is now up to the Ministry of Justice to decide whether to file a lawsuit.
